The much-desired Elks Lodge is now a certainty for Hood River, according to C. A. Richards, a leading member of the order. Mr. Richards on Tuesday of this week, received a communication from the Grand Exalted Ruler, John G. Price, of Cincinnati that the request of local Elks for a charter for a lodge in this city had been granted, and that the necessary details might now be proceeded with. Mr. Richards states that, towards the end of May, a charter class of 165 will be initiated in the order, all having met the requirements for membership.

Local melon growers and sportsmen are planning the organization of crow shooting parties this year and prizes may be offered for the most scalps, it was learned this morning. County Agent C. W. Daigh and Manager W. S. Nelson of the Chamber of Commerce are cooperating on a plan for the extermination of the “black chickens.”

While there is still considerable work to be done, the new Rialto theater will open for its first show on Friday, May 4, according to Will Gamble, who was up from Portland this week to set the opening date.

Wasco county had two cases of syphilis and one case of gonorrhea, the only communicable disease reported for the week ending April 21, according to the bulletin put out by the Oregon board of health. Measles held the lead, for the state as a whole, in communicable diseases listed for the week, with 85 cases reported. Chicken pox was second, with 83 cases, and gonorrhea third, with 39 cases.
The Columbia river here at The Dalles, which at one time this spring stood at almost 32 feet, today was down to 27.9 feet, as shown by the official measurement this morning.

They’ll mark this month as a “black April” in Hood River county sheriff’s books. First, on April 2, a woman and three of her four children suffered fatal burns when fire gutted their home on Trout Creek Ridge near Parkdale. Then on Saturday, April 10, the wife of Cascade Locks Mayor Tom Miles was found dead in the bathtub at her home, an apparent victim of accidental drowning. As the month entered its final week, the helicopter carrying three men whirled into Bonneville power lines near Hood River, killing all three.

Three men were killed when their helicopter crashed and burned after striking a 115,000 - volt power line three miles southeast of here Monday afternoon ... The helicopter was empowered by the firm to spray chemicals for weed control near Beacon Rock on the north shore of the Columbia River.

A countdown goes from 10 down to one, the gate drops and two dragsters zip in two blurs down the track as onlookers cheer. It’s not a track scene featuring dragsters or “funny cars;” but try out in the industrial arts shop at Hood River Middle School, where students of teacher Mark Mochon were testing CO-2 powered dragsters in preparation for a big competition during May. Cars were designed and built by students during a unit on power and transportation. They’re constructed of bass wood, and are powered by single CO-2 cartridges. The cars are about 1/20th scale , 10-12 inches long.

The AIDS virus antibody test has been made available at health departments around the state including the Wasco-Sherman County Health Department. Officials at the local health department said a nurse has to be on duty when the test is administered and an interview is also held to determine if the test is actually needed.
