‘Sharing the Rough’ benefit film April 21 at arts center
The film is the first ever to document the complete journey of a gemstone — from the hands of East African miners, to the gem-cutter, then to the designer and finally to the public as a finished product. Ken Apland of Apland Jewelers has had the opportunity to help local communities in Kenya and Tanzania. While many jewelers wait for gem dealers to come to their store, Apland goes straight to the source — this not only provides access to gemstone rough directly from the mine but also provides much needed business for local miners.
The Hood River screening will be held on Thursday, April 21, at the Columbia Center for the Arts, beginning with a reception with the director at 6 p.m.; show time is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Apland Jewelers for $20 and all proceeds will benefit the United Way of the Columbia Gorge.

The nice thing about participating in lots of different kinds of music is that I have those things to draw from when I am writing. It gives me a lovely large musical toolbox,” Schmidt said.
