The 19th annual Elks Student of the Year ceremony was held in the Elks Lodge ballroom on the evening of May 31. Les Perkins, local businessman and County Commissioner, was the guest speaker. He talked about the value of community service and how the benefits of helping others within the community are long lasting and beneficial in many different ways.
This year’s winners were Caitlyn Fick and Madison Graham, first place, receiving $1000 each. Diana Lachino and Scottie Zeigner, second, received $600 each and Ibette Sanchez and Jessie Carr, third, received $400 each. The other monthly winners were Anneke Virk, Mason McDowell, Christina Garcia, Megumi Hosaka, Annelise Acosta, Joy Bell, Lucy McLean, Breanna Weekly, Kylie Webb, Nancy Funez, Hannah Berry and Stanley Ocheskey.
“I would like to especially thank Linda Sanders for her help with the Student of the Month program,” said George Johnson, chairman. “She has done a great deal to help this program over many years and I could not have gotten it done without her help. She has tireless energy and thankfully finds time to help with this program.
“I would like to thank ER John Buckley, Trustees Bear Trotebas and Wes Hadley, esquire Jean Hadley, secretary Bill Cross, Loyal Knight Gordon Leigh and PER Mike Frahm for their support, help and attendance at the dinner. Thanks also to Gary Griffith and Chef John for their help in the kitchen. My many thanks to Gordon Leigh for taking pictures; he does an outstanding job behind the camera.”
Johnson continued, “This year’s students, like past years, are an outstanding group of young people. They have a career path outlined and are prepared for their next journey. We wish them well and thank them for what they have done in the community.”
Johnson thanks all members who contribute to the program and those who play in and support the annual golf tournament, whether as a member of a team or through sponsorship. He also thanks Meadow Outdoor for their donated use of the billboard through the month of July that honors the winners.
“You allow us to recognize and honor these fine young students each year, and without your support, the programs would not survive,” Johnson said. “Thank you.”
