The Columbia Gorge Experience event Sept. 14 at Sunshine Mill brought in just over $63,000 for the Mid-Columbia Health Foundation’s Breast Health for Strong Families Program.
Guests were invited for “Dinner Under the Silos” where an auctioneer led the crowd in a paddle raise for the program.
“The generosity of our community members is astonishing,” said Celeste Hill-Thomas, foundation executive director. “I feel very grateful to live in a place where people really care about the health and well-being of their neighbors.”
“The Breast Health for Strong Families Program was designed to break down barriers to care for women in our community who are not getting mammograms,” Hill-Thomas said.
Since the program began three years ago, the Health Foundation has been able to provide 249 mammograms to qualifying women. Five of those women were diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Early detection is key to fighting cancer” said Hill-Thomas. “These women may not have received mammograms had the Breast Health for Strong Families Program not been available to them.”
The event included a concert with local Irish band, Barley Draught. Because the band donated their performance, all ticket sales also went straight to the Breast Health for Strong Families Program, adding to the event total.
