Pie Night serves ‘good, clean’ fun

Brent Compton won the pie-eating contest, and $20, during halftime of the boys basketball game. His competitors included Noah Lane, Jacob Mekeliak, Morgan Williams and Andy Schmidt.

They wore plastic bags that kept filling and crust off their clothing but also immobilized their arms, forcing them to rely on their chins to maneuver the pies.

Crompton tackled “some kind of berry” pie as the contestants were told to “get as much as you can eat in one minute.” (Indeed, the contest involved actual baked pies, rather than pans filled with whipped cream typical of many similar events, including the popular Homecoming tradition.)

The evening was a notably festive one, with plenty of students in attendance for the Friday night game. The band played, under direction of Mark Steighner, and the cheer squad performed a rousing set of stunts, with members repeatedly going airborne. The national anthem was performed by Hannah Swyers and Lauren Gray.

Pie Night was the second such event, following a successful one held during a football game last fall.

Organizer, Juliana Dolan said the pie-eating contest was added to the theme to draw attention to the silent auction in the lobby.

Booster Club supports all the kids at the high school, including clubs and activity groups, and sports teams.

The winter Lock-In and senior party are other programs supported by the Booster Club, which also provides four scholarships.

Boosters try to give money to any deserving group, but the teams or clubs have to present their cases and tell the Boosters what they want the money for in a formal way at a Booster Club meeting, and are also expected to do their own fundraising as well, Dolan noted, who organized Pie Night.
