Instructor and artist Steven Christian will teach students how to use everyday school and office supplies to make comics and cartoons. The workshop will run from 1-4 p.m. on May 13 in the studio at Columbia Center for the Arts, and is geared for anyone age 10 and up. By the end of the class, Christian and the class participants will have created a short digital cartoon.
Christian is a visual artist living in Portland, Ore. Born and raised in Sacramento, Calif., Christian grew up playing sports, mainly football, basketball, and baseball. He earned a football scholarship at the University of Hawaii. During his college career, he also began to explore art and comics, which became an important avenue of self-expression for Christian.
Years later he hung up the cleats, received his Master of Arts from Oregon State, and is now studying to apply to medical school. In hopes of reinventing himself as a visual artist, he aims to create a series that will reflect his environment and promotes creativity in the African American community.
Space is limited to 15 students; register at columbiaarts.org. All supplies are included with the registration fee. This event is part of the art center’s month-long, center-wide celebration of the Art and Culture of Japan.
