WYETH — Campers at Wyeth Campground near Cascade Locks were put on Level 2 evacuation notice along with nearby residents as a fire sprang up around 5:30 p.m. on July 7, close to where fire struck in August 2022.
Smoke began rising above the tree canopy and could been seen clearly on the Washington side of the Columbia River, alarming motorists on I-84 who started calling 9-1-1.
As fire resources arrived, staging was set up on Herman Creek Road shortly after Cascade Public Works closed it down from traffic.
It wasn’t long before fire command requested air support as the initial 1.5-acre fire, along with two burning deck piles, began tossing embers into nearby timber, causing the fire to expand to 6.8 acres.
Given the difficulty of the terrain, more requests for mutual aid and air attack were quickly put in to try and put a halt to the fire’s forward progress.
Two Fire Bosses were dispatched from Dallesport, aiding firefighting crews on the ground, and they were joined 1.5 hours later by a VLAT (Very Large Air Tanker) from Moses Lake, Washington.
Combined efforts slowed the fire’s progress, and as night fell, rising humidity and light winds helped crews gain the upper hand on the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
