South Wasco beat visiting Falls City/Kings Valley, 51-36, in a first round OSAA Class 1A six-man football game Nov. 4 in Maupin.
The No. 6-ranked Redsides (7-2) reached the 12-team state playoffs for a second straight year and will play in the quarterfinals after their win over the No. 12-ranked Mountaineers (6-3). The Redsides, guided by Coach Mike Waine, will play the No. 3-ranked Elkton High Elks (7-1) in a 1 p.m. contest Nov. 10 at Elkton High School.
“It’s late in the season, so we’re really beat up like most teams are at this time of the year,” said Waine. “There’s just no quit in our kids though, and Gavin Hagan (injured hand), Joey Holloway (shoulder injury), and Trey Mullet (bruised rib) each found a way to come out here and play through the pain of their nagging injuries to help us get a big win.”
The Redsides overcame a 12-6 Mountaineer first-quarter advantage by scoring 21 second-quarter points to build a 27-18 halftime lead. Leading 19-18, the Redsides extended the margin when junior quarterback Storm McCoy (19-for-41 passing, 412 yards) threw an 87-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Holloway (nine catches, 233 yards receiving, three TDs).
“Everybody is in the playoffs for a reason and every game is going to get harder and harder. My assistant Coach Michael Carter had a great defensive scheme that was right on and very effective for us,” Waine said.
The Redsides were led on defense by sophomore linebacker George Barnett, with a team-high 10 tackles, followed by junior defensive back Gavin Hagen (nine tackles) and Holloway (6.5 tackles). On offense, Holloway contributed eight carries for 51 yards rushing.
The contest marked the final home game of seniors Mullet and Holloway.
