THE GORGE — Cascade Locks Historical Museum, the Columbia Gorge Museum, The Dalles Art Center, the Goldendale Library, the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum and Maryhill Museum of Art present “As the Crow Flies,” a month of public programs to celebrate the history, culture and seasonal beauty of October in Columbia River Gorge area.
“As the Crow Flies” is a metaphor used to join the diverse and rich collection of programs happening at these six cultural institutions from Cascade Locks to Goldendale. Imagine a crow, its curiosity peaked, flying down the Columbia River, and stopping at each location to explore. This is the essence of “As the Crow Flies,” said a press release.
Locals and visitors will be treated to programs that bring the spirit of autumn and Halloween to life in ways unique to each cultural institution.
“The people who visit all six organizations participating in ‘As the Crow Flies’ in October will be treated to inspiring programming from the Magical History Masquerade dinner cruise with Cascade Locks Historical Museum to creating life-sized ghosts at The Ghosts of Maryhill Museum and everything in-between,” said Laura Matzer, executive director of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum. “The collaboration and communication between our organizations is exciting and unprecedented. We focused our efforts on creating something special for our community. I plan to participate in as many programs as possible starting on Oct. 5 with the ‘As the Crow Flies’ landscape exhibit at The Dalles Art Center and later in the month at The Goldendale Library for Crafternoon — Ravens & Crows & Bats.”
Each organization is offering one or more public programs as part of “As the Crow Flies.” During October, residents and visitors can plan to attend activities such as Nevermore, a reading of “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe at The Dalles Art Center, help create the public art display “A Murder of Crows” at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum, or build a ghostly scarecrow (with music by Whiskey Flats) at the Ghosts of Skamania County event at the Columbia Gorge Museum. There is something for everyone from families to couples or seniors.
“I thought that this group of six cultural organizations could join together to create programming that locals and visitors alike would enjoy. Here at the Columbia Gorge Museum, we are hosting the Ghosts of Skamania County where people can make their own ghosts and learn about the history of the area. I have set a challenge for myself to attend as many of the ‘As the Crow Flies’ programs as I can in October,” said Louise A. Palermo, executive director of the Columbia Gorge Museum and the instigator of this collaboration. “I see ‘As the Crow Flies’ as a first of many collaborative programming efforts with this group of organizations.”
