WHITE SALMON — Superintendent Rich Polkinghorn had a construction update for White Salmon Valley School District (WSVSD) board members at their Aug. 27 meeting.
As previously reported, WSVSD passed a 20-year, $77.8 million bond to create a unified, renovated campus in Washington’s Feb. 10 Special Election. Since then, the district has selected Design West Architects, an architectural firm located in the Tri-Cities, and sold the first series of school bonds in July.
Polkinghorn said the district is now in the “Design Development” stage.
“A couple of weeks ago, I met with the architects and got to see what I would call version 1.0 of the designs,” he said. “It was pretty exciting. For the first time, you can really start to see these projects taking shape.”
There will be several versions before plans are finalized as architects integrate district feedback into their designs.
Starting Sept. 9, administrators will meet every other week with architects, Construction Services Group, and school staff to get a “fairly complete” design for each of the three projects; from there, the team will focus on Henkle Middle School / Wallace & Priscilla Stevenson Intermediate School before turning its attention to Columbia High.
“There has also been a ton of work happening that is much less visible,” he said. “We have had engineers in and around our campuses throughout the summer — structural, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, geotechnical, you name it. There is a lot that has to be understood about these buildings and sites before we start construction, and that work is happening now.”
