THE DALLES – The Columbia Gorge Native American Youth Advisory Council held a Native American Heritage Night during two basketball games in The Dalles on Jan. 23 and 24 in Kurtz Gymnasium.
The night included: dancing, fry bread concessions and a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds from the event went to the Youth Advisory Council.
Dancers performed ceremonies before the basketball games on Friday and Saturday, as well as during the halftimes of those respective games.
Dance practice was open to all Native students on Jan. 14 and 21, regardless of school district. All dancers (youth and adults) were welcome to join the halftime performance.
To help commemorate the night, the Riverhawks boys basketball team wore black jerseys with native print on Jan. 23, while the girls team wore native print warm-up shirts on Jan. 24.
