Mid-Columbia Community Concert Association (MCCCA) will present Locarno on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at The Dalles Civic Auditorium, located at 323 E. Fourth St. in The Dalles. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the Civic’s Club 22 providing food and drinks for purchase. The show begins at 7 p.m.
Locarno is the Mexican/Latin project of JUNO Award (Canadian Grammy) winning musician, Tom Landa. Like him, the music is equal parts Mexican and Canadian. Tom was born and raised in Mexico City and moved to Canada in his teens. In the mid-90s, he formed the beloved Folk Roots band, The Paperboys, who have been touring worldwide for more than 30 years. Tom has always dabbled in Latin music, and in 2005 decided to immerse himself fully into the genre and started working on material for an album. In 2006 he was awarded a Canada Council Grant to study traditional Mexican Music in Veracruz, Mexico. Tom spent his days learning the jarana (an eight-string guitar), and learning songs from the Son Jarocho repertoire.
Locarno’s original mix of music incorporated Son Jarocho-inspired folk tunes with Afro-Cuban rhythms and has developed to include Columbia, African Sukous, Mexican Marimba Music, Venezuelan Joropo and Brazilian Forro for a unique and exhilarating combination.
Tickets are available at Klindt’s Booksellers, online at www.mccca.info or at the door.
