Hi there, people of the Gorge!
As I write this, I am sitting in the Hood River Columbia Gorge News office for the last time (for now).
I’ve learned so much during my time here at CGN. I’ve been writing ever since I knew how, and always knew that I wanted to be a storyteller. After graduating with a degree in journalism, I knew that I wanted to write stories about people for people. And that’s exactly what I was able to do this summer.
I’m going to miss the casually breathtaking views, trying (and failing) to pet the deer in my backyard, and seeing stars I didn’t previously know existed. But what I will cherish most is the people.
I’ve had the privilege to meet some incredible folks, who not only spoke with me, but allowed me, a perfect stranger, to catch a glimpse into their world. By interviewing everyone from tomato farmers to ceramic artists, I’ve peered into many corners of the Gorge, an experience I am eternally grateful for.
The world is a scary place. Amidst the intrusion of AI, a plummeting job market, political tensions, and international conflicts brewing, I want to propose the idea of hope. Every person I interviewed this summer was unique, but when they spoke about their dedicated passion or mission, I saw the same glimmer of light in their eyes. I left each conversation with a new perspective and a bit of optimism towards the state of humanity. Those moments have built upon each other and have since kept me sane as a recent grad in such an unpredictable world.
A big thank you to the people who encouraged me throughout this experience, especially Trisha Walker, Chelsea Marr, Nate Wilson, Sean Avery, Zach Thummel, and Aziza Cooper-Hovland.
As I move back to Colorado, I wish CGN the best of luck in their future reporting, and encourage the people of the Gorge to keep sharing what makes the light in their eyes shine!
