Courtesy of Main Street MosierMOSIER — The City of Mosier will host the official grand opening of Jacob’s Skatepark on Sept. 12 from noon to 5 p.m. The five-year project memorializes Mosier skateboarder and musician Jacob Rogers at the downtown Mosier family-friendly facility between Hood River and The Dalles.
In 2019, at age 23, Rogers died of an undetected heart defect and major aortal rupture after finishing his restaurant shift as a supervisor at the Mt. Hood Meadows sports bar. Skateboarding was Jacob’s world.
A year after his death, his sphere of influence would resonate out into the community, pulling together a team of dedicated volunteers with non-profit Main Street Mosier (MSM), city government, and one of the world’s leading design-build skatepark companies — Dreamland Skateparks, Inc. — to do the nearly impossible.
John Grim, a former city engineer for Mosier and a skater himself, knew Jacob from nearby skateparks and Jacob’s mother Andrea Rogers from her time as former Mosier mayor and now city manager. Grim and MSM member Manny Rincon hit on the serendipitous idea of initiating a skatepark as a living memorial to Jacob and his spirit.
Lee Campbell, part of an MSM design committee, was looped in, as was then-MSM president Sam Trelstad, who officially kicked off the novel project by obtaining MSM board approval, and MSM mover and shaker Julianna Foster.
Construction of the skatepark was funded by an Oregon Parks and Recreation grant and was completed ahead of schedule successfully turning a brown field and former railroad yard into a thoughtfully integrated, well-designed family recreational facility and an outdoor gem of a hub for skaters, bikers and scooters of all ages and skill levels.
