Noah Noteboom photo/fileHorizon Christian School, guided by third-year Coach Kim Linder, was unable to overcome an 18-7 first quarter deficit and lost 59-45 Tuesday at home against Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler in the Big Sky League boys basketball playoffs.
The Eagles (17-7 overall) had the momentum going their way from the outset of the contest and held a large rebound advantage against the Hawks (10-12).
“The reason you get to play at home in the playoffs is because you earned it and usually the home teams are favored, but that’s why we play the games,” said Linder. “This wasn’t the outcome that we were looking for. I’m super proud of everyone, but it’s sad that our season ended abruptly, because that’s always really tough.”
The contest marked the conclusion of the Horizon Christian High School basketball career for seniors Logan Ensbury and Mason Bates.
“I’m really proud of both of our seniors,” said Linder. “Mason did everything we asked him to do and he finished his career ranked in the all-time top-five of scoring in school history with 1,080 total points. He has definitely been a well-respected player in our league. Logan worked really hard, and he had a great attitude this year and he improved a lot. We’re certainly going to miss both of those guys.”
The win was the third straight for the Eagles, who have won eight of their last nine games. The Eagles advanced to a second-round matchup and they’ll play a 6 p.m. game Thursday versus Sherman (23-1) in Moro.
Condon beats Lyle
The No. 2 seeded East Division Condon High Blue Devils (14-7 overall) won 64-43 over the West Division No. 3 seeded Lyle/Wishram High Cougars (8-13) in a first round matchup Tuesday at Condon High School. The Blue Devils advance to a second-round contest Thursday at 6 p.m. versus the No. 1 West Division seed Dufur High Rangers (19-2 overall) at Dufur High School.
The contest marked the first-ever appearance for the Cougars in the Big Sky District Playoffs and the loss ended their season. It also marked the final game of the Lyle/Wishram High School career for seniors Riley Smith, Kayden Woodman, and Ethan McConville.
Big Sky girls playoffs
The Class 1A Big Sky League girls basketball playoffs begin Wednesday with two first-round matchups. The West Division No. 2 seeded South Wasco County High Redsides (18-6 overall) meet the East Division No. 3 seeded Sherman High Huskies (12-13 overall) in a 6 p.m. contest in Maupin. The West No. 3 seeded Dufur High Rangers (5-15 overall) play the East No. 2 seed the Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler High Eagles at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Spray High School. The winners of both games advance to second round games on Friday.
