HOOD RIVER — Yoselin Sedano-Alamo and Anthony Schu, both Hood River Valley seniors have been selected as September students of the month. They each received checks for $200 and will become eligible for the Student of the Year and cash awards at the end of the school year.
Yoselin Sedano-Alamo is the Secretary of the National Honor Society, a 4.00 student and has taken advanced classes in AP Physics 1, AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry and Writing 121/122. She is a Questbridge Prep Scholar, a Scholar for Honors Biology and a Scholar for Reading/Writing 115.Â
She is a member of Health Occupation Students of America, Sources of Strength and the Stanford Neuroscience Journal Club. Earlier this year she participated in a field trip to Juneau, Alaska to understand how the polar environment is changing. She is a member of the Leo’s Club and the last two years has participated on the tennis team.
She has an extensive number of hours with community service work. Her main focus has been on Outdoor School as a counselor and at a middle school acting as a tutor for middle school students in subjects they were struggling with. She has also worked at the Harvest Fest, Hit and Run Santa, Fall Fest, Valentines for Senior’s and the Parkdale carnival.
Following graduation she would like to attend the University of Chicago or the University of Oregon. Her goal is to pursue a career in the medical field, possibly in neuro-science.
She is the daughter of Rojelio Sedano and Ana M. Alamo. She has three brothers, Jorge, Rogerio and Brayan along with younger sister Azalea.
Anthony Schu is this year’s President of the National Honor Society and has taken coursework in AP Calculus, AP U.S. History, AP Physics, Writing 115, Technical and Professional Communication (WR227) as well as General Psychology and Sociology.
Anthony is very involved with the River of Life Assembly Youth group, with the GenNow Oregon Youth Convention, a GenNow Youth camp and attended three leadership conventions that will help him decide on his path for future education. He gave a presentation with the Hood River County Prevention Department to an Advanced Health class on how to administer Naloxone if an overdose occurs. Anthony also was part of a group that assembled 1000 opioid rescue kits. He was also a member of the HRV Water Polo team his freshman year.
His community service work includes supervising young students in various activities at the GenNow Western Oregon Kids camp, assisted the camp team with any necessary tasks and also in helping his church worship team with various projects. He has spent time helping youngsters on the inner workings of Lego robots, teaching them to code and guided their build process.
Anthony would really like to attend M.I.T. on the next step of his career path. He is also considering Oregon State. He plans to study Nuclear Engineering with the focus on energy production.
He is the great-grandson of Bill and Claudia Perkins.
