An on-field altercation with about 10 minutes left in The Dalles at Cottage Grove boys socce…
The No. 8-ranked Dalles High Riverhawks concluded their finest boys soccer season in school history by advancing to the Nov. 7 OSAA Class 4A boys soccer state semifinals where they lost, 3-1, at Cottage Grove.
The No. 6-ranked Sky-Em League champion Lions (14-3-1) lost in the Nov. 11 title match to Newport, 2-1, in overtime.
The Riverhawks (10-3-3) came into the semifinal contest with the momentum of a four-game win streak, including a 2-1 quarterfinal home win Nov. 4 over the No. 16-ranked Crook County High Cowboys (6-7-4).
The Riverhawks were seeking their first-ever berth in the boys state soccer championship.
Cottage Grove scored a goal off a corner kick with four minutes remaining in the first half to take a 1-0 halftime lead. The Dalles tied the match in the 58th minute on a penalty kick goal scored by junior forward Hulises Najera, the Riverhawks’ leading scorer with 20 goals. Senior forward Adrian Rodriguez was fouled by a Lions’ player inside the 18-yard box to give The Dalles a scoring opportunity on the penalty kick.
The Lions responded by scoring goals in the 62nd minute and the 68th minute for the final 3-1 advantage. Cottage Grove’s second score came on a rebound shot, after The Dalles’ defenders failed to mark up near the goal. The third goal came when a The Dalles defender appeared to be shoved from behind into the Riverhawks’ goalie. He appeared to have secured the ball, but the collision caused the ball to squirt away toward an unmarked Lion player — who converted the open shot.
The match was delayed 24 minutes after an on-field altercation (see related story, this issue) with about 10 minutes remaining.
The contest marked the final game of the The Dalles High School careers of 11 Riverhawk seniors: Luciano Alvarado, Gilberto Guttierez, Adrian Rodriguez, Jaeden Bullard, Hector Morales, Diego Rodriquez, Nolan Donivan, Bryson Seibert, Oswaldo Heredia, Carter Randall, and Angel Rodriguez.
