Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Marion Eilene Eslinger was born at home southeast of Kent, Oregon, on July 14, 1921, the first of two children to Ormand Wren and Rosa Amick Hogue. After living an extremely full and active life, she passed away on Aug. 31, 2025, in The Dalles, Oregon, at the age of 104.
Eilene married Ernest Marcus Eslinger in The Dalles on June 28, 1940, and they spent 53 good years together before Marc passed away in 1993. After Marc returned from serving in the Navy, they farmed east of Grass Valley and raised three daughters. In 1955, the family moved to northern Idaho and raised cattle and hay for five years before moving back to Sherman County. Eventually they owned and operated Eslinger Equipment together. Eilene was known as the “best parts lady in the area.” After selling the business, they wintered in a RV park in Yuma, Arizona, where she was known as “the pie lady.” One of Eilene’s pies was auctioned at a benefit fundraiser for $1,000.
Eilene loved flowers and had one of the best flower gardens in Grass Valley. She could be seen working in her yard when she wasn’t traveling the world. She visited all seven continents and all 50 states.
Eilene was a very civic-minded person and very generous with her time and talents. When her girls were in school, she was a 4-H leader, Brownie leader and Theta Rho advisor. She was a life member of the Rebekahs and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Legion and always worked on their service projects. Eilene was a life member of Sherman Historical Society and one of the original volunteers. She continued to volunteer host even after moving to The Dalles in 2015.
Eilene was preceded in death by her husband Marc and brother Roy Hogue, three sons-in-law and three great-grandchildren. She is survived by her three daughters, Alice Eilene Knox, Rosalee Gardner and Leta Ann Reckmann; grandchildren Ernest Knox, Edward Knox (Carlia), Lisa Domagala, Rosa Fuss (Stacy) and Marc Reckmann (Haily); and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests any donations be made to the Sherman Historical Society in Eilene’s memory.
Burial was held at the Grass Valley Cemetery Sept. 5. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Cherry Heights Retirement Center in The Dalles. All her many friends are welcome at this celebration.
