According to information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Natural Resources Conservation Service, the state of Washington experienced one of the driest and warmest summer/fall periods on record in 2002.
"A good wet fall helped carry precipitation totals through the end of September at near normal levels," said Scott Pattee, a USDA water supply specialist based in Mount Vernon.
Pattee reported that July-September had below-average precipitation, while October and November were very warm and dry. With December came the rains -- but also above average temperatures. That delayed normal snowpack accumulation for at least a month.
"Considerable precipitation over the next several months will be required to mitigate current soil moisture, groundwater, and stream-flow deficits," Pattee explained.
