The Mid-Columbia Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (MCUUF) in Hood River announces the appointment of Cathy Rion, M. Div., as its new half-time minister.
Her first service will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Rockford Grange, 4262 Barrett Rd., Hood River. Her sermon is entitled "Do Differences Divide?"
In accepting the position, Rion said, "I am thrilled to begin serving this vibrant and growing intergenerational community of spiritual seekers, truth tellers, and justice makers. Together, we will live out MCUUF's mission."
MCUUF's mission is to "come together as a welcoming religious community that nurtures our spiritual growth, broadens our minds, and supports us in service to the wider world."
After obtaining a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Stanford University, Rion worked for many years as a community organizer in the San Francisco Bay area before making the decision to enter the Starr King School for Ministry in Berkeley, Calif. She received a master's in divinity degree from that institution in May, 2010.
She has just completed serving for one year as intern minister at the First Unitarian Church of Portland. She speaks Spanish and enjoys playing cello, singing, swimming, yoga, gardening, children, and chocolate.
"Cathy brings a loving presence and a passion for building beloved community," said Holly Harrel, chair of the MCUUF board. "We are eagerly looking forward to a successful ministry with her. Unitarian Universalism in the Gorge is active and vibrant."
MCUUF welcomes visitors and newcomers at its 10 a.m. Sunday service at the Rockford Grange. Child care and children's religious education are available.
