Thanks to a state grant, several of White Salmon's streets are scheduled for repaving later this month.
According to Wil Keyser, director of the city's Public Works Department, the Washington Department of Transportation provided White Salmon with a $75,000 Small City Pavement Program grant last year. Since only about $16,000 of the total was expended in 2001, the balance is available for the city to use this year.
In a project that is expected to cost approximately $55,000, asphalt overlays and chip sealing are scheduled for several streets.
The work is planned to start on June 17, with the Klickitat County Road Department contracted to handle the task.
The project will affect several streets:
NW Cherry Street from Main to Moore Lane;
NE Cherry from Main to Stauch;
Wisconsin Street from Main to Stauch; and
NE Green Street from Main to Estes.
In addition to the asphalt, chip sealing work will take place on Main from Jewett to Spring Street. The sealing helps to keep moisture out of the pavement, which extends its life and defers the need to repave a street.
"We should be able to get an extra five to seven years out of that part of Main," Keyser said.
The entire project is expected to take several days, and motorists are advised to expect to be rerouted.
"Main Street will be closed for certain stretches, and traffic will be detoured," Keyser said. "Other streets will be closed during the work."
In a related but separate project, Mid-Columbia Paving will install a storm drain system along 1,100 feet of SE Oak, then complete an asphalt overlay on the reconstructed road. That work is scheduled to begin on June 5.
