HRV swimmers denied by Douglas
The Hood River Valley High School swimmers received an unexpected day off last Thursday, when they were “uninvited” to a dual meet that was scheduled to take place in Portland.
Coach Jane Nichols did not know why David Douglas High School had cancelled the event, but was disappointed to find out just as her team was boarding the bus.
“We were disappointed, but we made the best of it,” she said. “We had a make-shift meet here in Hood River and it was good practice for the kids. Some even swam in every event, which impressed me.”
Nichols hopes that Centennial doesn’t do the same thing next Thursday, when the Eagles are scheduled to travel to Gresham for another non-conference dual meet.
Next up for the Eagles is The Dalles Invitational on Saturday at the Hood River Aquatic Center.
The team has three meets, including a Feb. 4 home meet against Pendleton, remaining before the Feb. 14 district meet in Bend.

Avalanche Awareness class Thursday
The local Alpinee Club will host an avalanche awareness lecture on Thursday from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Alpinee Hut, 1889 Tucker Road in Hood River. The class is free and open to the public. A field session on Saturday will follow. Cost for the field session is $5 and carpools will meet at 9 a.m. The field session is designed for backcountry recreationalists, and people are asked to bring their equipment. Handball tournament Saturday at Elks
Stop by the Hood River Elks Club at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the 8th annual Hugh Hinman Memorial Handball Tournament. Spectators are welcome free of charge, to watch 12 local players and 12 players from Portland battle it out for the top prize. If you have questions, call Ken Goe at 354-2211.
Table tennis returns to First Baptist
The First Baptist Church in Hood River is hosting a Wednesday night table tennis club again this year. The first meeting was Jan. 15, and anyone interested in playing is welcome to turn out from 7-9 p.m. every Wednesday through March in the fellowship hall at 1889 Belmont Dr. Call 386-4923 with questions.

Softball fundraiser to be held Friday
Show your support for the Hood River Valley High School softball team by attending a Chili Feed on Friday, Jan. 24. Mt. Adams Nordic ski race on Jan. 25
Come enjoy a winter morning at Mt. Adams during the five-mile (8 km) Big Tree Ski cross-country ski race on Saturday, Jan. 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The free event is open to both competitive racers and those who want to ski at a more relaxed pace. The course is a loop trail for classic diagonal stride skiing. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and participants are asked to meet at the Pineside Sno-Park, 6 miles north of Trout Lake. Knights of Columbus shoot upcoming
The Knights of Columbus will sponsor a youth Hoop Shoot on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 2-4 p.m. at Wy’east Middle School. All kids, ages 10-14 as of Jan. 1, are eligible, and proof of age is required. For more information, call Frank Wall at 354-2489.
