On Friday night, Nov. 12, 2004, at approximately 6:30 p.m., a Skamania County deputy was involved in a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a Stevenson resident. The deputy and a reserve officer were not physically injured.
Michael E. Colvin, 40, died at the scene. Skamania County Deputy Tim Converse, a veteran officer with over 25 years with Skamania County, has been placed on paid administrative leave. Reserve deputy Chris Fassel has also been placed on administrative leave.
The Skamania County 911 Center received a call at 6:30 p.m. from a resident at Skamania Coves Resort. The caller reported that Colvin, a neighbor, had assaulted both him and his 22-year-old son.
Responding deputies were advised that Colvin had a bottle as a weapon. After arriving, deputies were confronted by a Colvin who threatened them with a knife.
Deputies attempted to convince the individual to release his weapon and cooperate with their commands. Deputies made repeated attempts to get Colvin to drop the knife with no success. Colvin refused to release the knife and continued to threaten officers eventually leading deputy Converse to utilize deadly force.
The Regional Major Crimes Team has been assigned to investigate the incident.
"This is a difficult incident for everyone involved. Our thoughts at this time are with the deputy and his family, the family of the deceased subject and this community. The appropriate resources are being made available to those involved to help them through this difficult time," said Skamania County Sheriff Dave Brown.
Brown added, "We are hopeful that through the investigative process we will gain a better understanding as to why Mr. Colvin reacted in the manner he did when the deputies contacted him on Friday night."
