In Skamania County, meanwhile, there are competitive contests for a seat on the Skamania County Board of Commissioners, as well as for the Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

The primary will decide which two candidates in each race will advance to the general election in November, so this is a very important primary.

The Enterprise avoids endorsing political candidates in city and county elections, but we strongly urge all citizens to cast their ballots. Make sure the candidate you prefer will be there on the November ballot. If he or she doesn't place in the top two now, he or she won't be there in November.

Ballots must be in to the Auditor's Office or in the official ballot drop boxes (there is one in White Salmon next to the White Salmon post office) by Tuesday, Aug. 17, no later than 8 p.m. Please vote!

One other interesting item related to the upcoming election: Although The Enterprise is based in White Salmon and primarily features news about Klickitat County, we've noticed that there are more campaign letters from Skamania County voters than from Klickitat County voters. Over the last two weeks, for example, we have received seven letters in support of various candidates from citizens in Skamania County, and only four from Klickitat County residents.

We can't figure out why that might be. Are Skamania County voters more involved and interested in politics? Are residents there more engaged with their political leaders? Do citizens of Skamania County care more about their county? Something to think about.
