On Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Skamania County Sheriff's Office will be providing an opportunity for citizens to dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs through the first ever nation-wide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day headed by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The DEA will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at sites nationwide on Saturday, one of which is the sheriff's office site.
The location will be at the parking lot in front of the sheriff's office at 200 Vancouver Avenue in Stevenson. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.
Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away -- both potential safety and health hazards.
Controlled, non-controlled, and over the counter substances will be collected. Citizens are requested to keep medications in their original containers and to remove personal identification information by either removing the label or utilizing a permanent marker.
Liquid products such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container with the lid tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
Intra-venous solutions, injectibles, syringes, or medical waste WILL NOT be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens.
