Columbia Gorge neighbors White Salmon and Stevenson jump-started rivalry week with a five-set thrill ride of a volleyball match in Miller Memorial Gym.
The Bruins lost two of the first three sets to the Bulldogs but regrouped to pull out their second five-set victory in the last two weeks. Scores of the match were 22-25, 25-17, 15-25, 26-24, 16-14.
As the rollercoaster of a match careened toward its dramatic conclusion, Bruins Coach Terry Thomas turned to the press table, patted the left side of his chest in mock gesture and said: "I'm getting too old for this."
For Thomas and the Bruins, it was their fourth win in a row, an extension of a string of victories that raised their overall record to 6-4 and began with a non-league win against Trout Lake Sept. 30 and kept rolling with a victory in the championship match of the Trout Lake tournament on Oct. 2.
Offensive leaders for CHS were: (kills) Whitney Shelley 9, Corrine Blankenship 8, Abby Zuck 5, Sara Ribeiro 3, Becky Clary 2; (aces) Ribeiro 6, Blankenship 2, Megan Harvey 2; (assists) Harvey 31.
Defensive standouts were: (blocks) Shelley 8, Clary 7, Ab. Zuck 2; and (digs) Blankenship 4, Ab. Zuck 2, Desirae Lexa 2.
Stevenson finished the five-set affair with 14 aces, 31 kills, seven blocks and 13 digs.
La Center 3, at Columbia High 1 --
The Bruins won the opening set, 25-16, here last Thursday but lost the next three, 25-21, 28-26, 25-18, to end their winning streak.
Senior Corrine Blankenship had 12 kills, three aces and five digs for Columbia, which lost the season series to La Center, 2-0.
Other standouts for CHS included senior Abby Zuck (11 kills), senior Megan Harvey (39 assists), junior Sara Ribeiro (3 blocks, 2 kills), junior Becky Clary (4 kills, 2 blocks), junior Rainee Rohrbacher (2 blocks, 2 saves) and junior Ashley Neff (2 aces).
Junior Varsity:
Coach Amy Landgren's Junior Bruins won both home matches last week against their Stevenson and La Center counterparts.
