Sailing along

During the spring series, eight boats competed in the waters surrounding the Hood River Bridge. Winning the series was Lance Staughton, on his 30 foot S2 9.1 Symbiosis. In second place was Charlie and Martha Capovilla on Max Q, and in third was Bart Vervloet on Space Arc.

The Summer race series has started. Races are every Wednesday night, with skippers meeting at 6 p.m. on the docks. Anyone with sailing experience interested in crewing should come down to the docks and hop on a boat, as extra crew is always welcome.

Results from Wednesday, June 22 race:

The Hood River Yacht Club fleet raced a 12 mile course from the marina around Chicken Charlie Island and back. The course is one of the longest for weeknight races, and it is scheduled to coincide with one of the longest days of the year. In wind of 15-25 knots, the Steel Breeze team built a big lead approaching the island. However, Earth Girls are Easy made a great tactical choice to round the island in the opposite direction. With the benefit of more wind on this route and a better wind angle coming around the island, Earth Girls pulled ahead for the win. Shaka sailed a fast upwind leg back to the marina to finish third.
