RAY VERLEY
Longtime area resident Ray Verley passed away in White Salmon on Sept. 9, 2011, at the age of 90.
He was born Jewell Ray Verley in Wieser, Idaho, on Nov. 18, 1920, to Sylvia (Lolley) and Benjamin Hollister Verley. Ray went to school in Yakima and received a baseball scholarship to Linfield, where he played for one year.
He served in the Navy for four years during World War II. In 1949 Ray married Mary "Mae" Moore in Yakima and the couple moved to BZ Corner in 1951.
Mr. Verley worked in the timber industry as a logger from 1955 until 1968 when he started to operate The Logs Tavern. He was involved in operating the tavern until 1991.
Ray was active in Mt. Adams Loggers' Association and the White Salmon School Board.
He loved fishing, hunting and sports -- especially baseball and hockey. Always very engaged in family life, Mr. Verley provided a strong patriarchal figure for his children, grandchildren.
Ray is survived by his daughters Kae Winsett of Fork Union, Va., Jewell Rae Wiemer of Kimberly, British Columbia, and LaRae McCaslin of White Salmon; son Des Verley of White Salmon; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, one great, great-grandchild and cousin Gene "Ray" Verley. He was preceded in death by sisters Lamita Verley and LaVerne McBane.
The celebration of Ray's life will be held at Gardner Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at 1 p.m.

EDWARD KANE
Edward Arthur Kane was born to Anna (Zewitski) and Arthur Kane in Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 10, 1923.
At the age of 14, he left home and served overseas in the Army Air Force during World War II. After his return, Ed met Betty Elizabeth Tocco in Walla Walla and the couple married on Aug. 31, 1942.
Mr. Kane worked as a truck driver for John W. Tocco (his father-in-law) for Superior Motor Freight in Washington. Later, Ed worked for Mayflower Milk Company and Alpenrose Milk Company as a chemist where he made ice cream.
He retired at the age of 55 and enjoyed hobbies such as hunting and spending time outdoors. Ed liked to gamble and loved going to Las Vegas. He was also an avid reader of National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines and Zane Grey books.
For the past 10 years, Mr. Kane lived in Willard, close to his family.
Ed Kane passed away at his home on Sept. 9, 2011, at the age of 87.
He is survived by his children April Harris of Tualatin, Ore., John Kane of Willard, Mike Kane of Willard and Candy Cooper of Culver, Ore.; sisters Katherine Frances Kane Welch and brother Joseph Anthony Kane both of Philadelphia; 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, who passed away Feb. 28, 1967; daughter Elizabeth Luann Tomkins, sister Helen Dorothy Kane and brother James "Jimmy" Kane.
Cremation arrangements were handled by Gardner Funeral Home.
