TERRY SCHMITT
Terry Layne Baasch was born in Ellensburg on May 23, 1952, to Frances (Williams) and Edward "Red" Baasch. She died at her home in Lyle on June 18, 2008, at the age of 56.
She grew up in Ellensburg and in 1979 she and William Schmitt rode their motorcycles to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, where the couple married. The couple relocated to The Dalles, Ore., in 1980 and settled in Lyle in 1981. They owned D & S Frame and Body in Hood River, Ore., before selling the business and semi-retiring. The Schmitts traveled wherever they wanted to go; Mrs. Schmitt often bragged that they had been on every road west of the Mississippi. She also enjoyed trips to Ireland, Mexico, Hawaii and New Zealand. Though she liked riding motorcycles, horses were her passion. It was a family joke that she worked only so she could support her four-legged friends.
Surviving are her husband Bill Schmitt, Lyle; father Red Baasch, Ellensburg; son Mike Schmitt, Yakima; daughter Debb Jones, Zillah; brothers Richard Baasch, Gig Harbor, and Ron Baasch, North Bend; sister Ky Peterson, Union Gap; and grandchildren Kristy and Cody Wolff, Aaron Schmitt, and Lauren, Denny and Lonna Jones.
All are invited to celebrate Mrs. Schmitt's life at an ice cream social Saturday, June 28, 2008, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Lyle Lions Club.
Memorials can be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle St. The Dalles, Ore. 97058.
Gardner Funeral Home handled cremation arrangements.
