GWEN JEWELL
Gwendoline Jewell, 88, formerly of Appleton, died on Dec. 22, 2003, at Evergreen Care Facility in The Dalles, Ore.
Mrs. Jewell was born July 4, 1915, in Suffolk County, England, to Edward and Minnie (Scott) Leach. After her school years, she worked at Brentwood Golf Club until World War II when she served the war effort as a nurse's aid at an orphanage in London. In 1950, she came to the United States to visit her sister Betty in Appleton, and while there met Lester Jewell. In 1952, she returned to the United States and married Lester and lived in Appleton where they raised their family.
Mr. Jewell always wanted to move to Alaska and homestead, but after moving from England, Mrs. Jewell felt that living in Appleton was close enough to homesteading for the Jewell family. After his death in 1987, Mrs. Jewell moved to Cherry Heights Retirement Center in The Dalles, where she lived out her remaining years.
While in The Dalles, Mrs. Jewell followed her father by attending St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was very active in the Appleton Women's Club and later in the consolidated Lyle-Appleton Women's Club.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family. She will be fondly remembered for her warm and loving heart, her patience and understanding, and her consideration for others.
Surviving Mrs. Jewell are sons Gary Jewell, Appleton, and Cliff, White Salmon; daughter Carol Jewell, Anchorage, Alaska; sister Betty Tuthill, Lyle; brothers Les, Ken and Roy in England; grandsons Justin Maupin, Hillsboro, Ore., and Jeff Jewell, Spokane; granddaughter Cindy Jewell, Lynwood; and great-grandsons Skyler and Mason Maupin, Hillsboro. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester, brothers Jack, Reggie and Cliff, and sister Mabel.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Gardner Chapel in White Salmon. Vault interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Appleton.
Memorials may be made to the Lyle Lions Club in care of Gardner Funeral Home, PO Box 390, White Salmon, Wash. 98672, who handled arrangements.
