Ryan Combelic found the end zone three times to lead Henkle Middle School's eighth-grade football team to a 24-0 victory over Jemtegaard in an Oct. 9 makeup game played in Washougal.
Combelic scored his first touchdown on a 45-yard run and got his second on a 55-yard punt return, both in the first quarter. In the second, Combelic hit paydirt for the Grizzlies from 60 yards.
Felix Torres added to Henkle's total by making all three of his 2-point conversion kicks.
On Henkle's last drive of the first half, Torres attempted a field goal from 27 yards that was partially blocked and fell about two feet short of the goal posts.
In the second half, Henkle's defense, led by Stephen Sams, Kristien Contreras, Dylan Rabinowitz and Connor Warner, took over and preserved the Grizzlies' shutout.
"The entire Grizzly defense hit harder than they have all season," Grizzlies Coach Dan Smith noted.
Henkle's best offensive drive of the second half came in the fourth quarter, when the Grizzlies moved the chains 90 yards before having a pass intercepted in the end zone.
But Jemtegaard couldn't capitalize on the turnover. Instead, Henkle's defense forced the Huskies to turn it over on downs. From there, the Grizzlies (2-2) ran out the clock.
The game was originally scheduled to be played Sept. 14 but was postponed due to bad weather.
Lyle-Klickitat-Wishram 32, The Dalles 7th 6:
The Cubs won their Oct. 11 home opener to improve to 3-0 in 2006 and 8-0-1 all-time.
Henry Matai and Jeremy Lemarr each scored two touchdowns and Billy Williams found the end zone once to pace LKW's offense.
But it was the outstanding play of LKW's defensive unit and special teams that Cubs Coach Don Smith said "won the game for us."
"We always got the ball on the short side of the field by either good defense or special teams play," Smith said, adding "We recovered three fumbles that we converted for touchdowns."
Crediting LKW's execution of the defensive game plan for The Dalles' spread offense put together by Coach Mike Steindorf, Smith said, "We bent but didn't break until late in the first quarter."
The Dalles finally broke through to take a 6-0 lead. But LKW countered in the second quarter with touchdown runs of 20 yards by Matai and 15 yards by Lemarr, who gave the Cubs a 13-6 advantage when he ran for the 1-point conversion after his own TD.
In the third quarter, LKW continued to grind it out against The Dalles. Williams scored from 3 yards and Matai added the run for conversion to make the score 20-6. Another scoring drive ended with a 2-yard run by Lemarr that put LKW on top, 26-6.
The Cubs' final score came with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, on a 32-yard pass from backup quarterback Trey Kitchens to Matai.
