The Mid-Columbia Marlins swept a pair of double-headers at Hecomovich Field last weekend to start the 2001 American Legion baseball season 4-0. They took two from Camas-Washougal, 12-2 and 16-2, in season-opening action Friday.
Eric Crause got the victory in game one, allowing four hits and an earned run, and striking out five in four innings of work. Derek Yeager had five runs batted in and two hits: a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run double in the fifth.
In game two, Chad Myers picked up the win. He worked four innings, giving up four hits, a walk and one unearned run, and struck out four. Brandon Verley knocked in four runs with a pair of two-run doubles. Dane Ludwig had two hits and scored three runs.
The Marlins improved to 4-0 with 10-0 and 11-7 victories over the Yakima Flyers on Sunday.
Crause spun a two-hit, six-inning shutout to win the opener. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, when he issued three of his four walks, and finished with six strikeouts. Zach Clifford, Chris Peck, Charlie Kitchin, Yeager and Myers each had run-scoring hits.
In the nightcap, the Marlins scored four runs with none out in the bottom of the sixth to break a 7-7 tie. Verley (3 for 4, three runs, four RBIs) socked his second solo home run of the game to lead off the inning. Four batters later, Ludwig (3 for 3) smashed a bases-clearing double.
Peck got the win in relief. He threw the final 1-2/3 innings and got the last out on a called third strike, on a 3-2 count with runners on first and second.
