For a dozen years now, the HUGS Fair ("Help Us Grow Safely") has been a fixture at Henkle Middle School, and it has been a tremendous community resource. This year's event was last Saturday, and hundreds of people attended.
The HUGS Fair is geared toward families. It serves to spread health and safety information -- for kids in particular -- and also distributes free safety equipment, such as bike helmets.
This annual fair is a community highlight because it is so helpful and so positive, and we want to honor those who have worked to organize this grand activity.
For the 2008 HUGS Fair, there were six key volunteers organizing and planning everything: Paula Trosper, Lisa Harness, Sheila Spring, Susan Kerr, Debra Reed, and Johanna Roe. They've done a great job.
In addition to the volunteers, there were four primary sponsors of the fair: WSU Extension/4-H; Henkle Middle School Associated Student Body; Project Open Door; and Skyline Foundation.
Also, five organizations donated funds to help ensure the fair had adequate resources: Mid-Columbia Family Physicians, White Salmon Harvest Market/Thriftway; Whitson PTO; Skyline Foundation; and the Washington Dairy Council.
Beyond that, there were about 30 agencies that hosted educational booths on Saturday.
All of the above need to know that their efforts in sponsoring this exceptional event are deeply appreciated. Here's to another 12 years of HUGS.
