It took them nearly one month to get their first win, but just four days to get their second.
Senior Becki Flory hit two free throws and the defense beared down late to help the HRV girls basketball team pull off an amazing 38-37 overtime victory over Bend on Saturday.
The win raised the Eagles’ season record to 2-8 (1-1 IMC), giving them a huge confidence boost heading into weekend showdowns with the IMC’s two other young teams, Crook County and Summit.
“We played very good defense throughout the game,” coach Tracy Norton said. “We also rebounded very well, giving up few second shot opportunities. That was very important because we were giving up a lot of size to them from the start.”
Junior Anna Hidle continued to impress in the paint, pulling down 10 rebounds to lead the team. Suni Davis and Talia Hinman each grabbed eight boards, while Flory added seven and Alyssa Ortega five, as the Eagles played larger than their roster sizes all night long.
“Anna continued to do a great job on the boards,” Norton said. “Overall, it was a gutsy effort for all of our girls and I’m very proud of their efforts.”
In the scoring department, Davis led the team with 12 points, while Flory finished with nine and Hidle with seven. Strong rebounding allowed HRV plenty of second-chance opportunities, while quick rotation on defense disallowed the Lava Bears any offensive rhythm down low.
“Offensively, we pulled the ball out and made them come to us and guard us,” Norton said. “That proved effective and allowed Suni to take advantage of her one-on-one skills.”
Saturday’s win came on the heels of a difficult 81-45 home defeat to IMC powerhouse Redmond on Friday.
The Panthers, who boast two of the league’s top scorers — Jessie Schaumberg (11.8 ppg) and Nicole Hudson (11.6 ppg) — jumped out to a 24-11 lead at the end of the first quarter on their way to a 40-24 halftime lead.
They employed frenetic defensive pressure throughout the game, and forced HRV to keep up with their run-and-gun style of play.
“They were a very impressive team,” Norton said. “We didn’t handle their full-court trap very well, and our inexperience really showed in that game.”
On a positive note, Norton pointed to the play of Davis, who led the team in rebounds with nine and also scored 10 points. She also commended Flory and freshman Stefanie Draper, who led the Eagles with 11 points each.
HRV played Hermsiton on Tuesday but results were not yet available. They will travel south to Crook County (Prineville) and Summit (Bend) this weekend for another set of back-to-back games.
