Earlier this year, the Underwood Conservation District (UCD) held a Big Tree Contest. From this contest has begun a database of the big and unique trees in Skamania County and the western third of Klickitat County.
The UCD hopes the trend will continue and will be accepting nominations all year round.
The categories are as follows: best wildlife habitat tree, best fish habitat enhancement tree, the biggest native conifer, the biggest native hardwood, the biggest non-native urban or residential tree, and the historic tree category.
The Registry is modeled after American Forests "National Register of Big Trees".
The Underwood Conservation District's nomination rules are as follows. If the trees are on private property, landowner permission must be received. Each entrant needs to measure the tree diameter, 4 1/2 feet from level ground, give a description of the tree location, include your name and telephone number and determine the category the tree is being nominated for.
Each entrant will receive a certificate for nominating a tree, which will be added to the UCD's database of big and unique trees. The database will also be available to the public upon request.
Remember the next time you are out hiking in Skamania or western third of Klickitat County, bring along a tape measure, so you can nominate a tree and be a part of the UCD's Big & Unique Tree Registry.
Nomination forms can be picked up at the Underwood Conservation District office, or by telephoning 493-1936.
Submit nominations forms to the Underwood Conservation District at 170 NW Lincoln St., P.O. Box 96, White Salmon, Wash. 98672.
This program is partially funded from the proceeds of the UCD Tree Sale Program.
