Jessika Nañez, an incoming The Dalles High School senior, was named Oregon’s Distinguished Young Woman Saturday in Salem, winning a $3,000 scholarship and the option of full-ride scholarships at various colleges nationwide.

Parade coordinator Tom Yates and his crew of Lion volunteers have done it again: the July 4 parade and Jackson Park festivities were a success, and a well-attended one. These events cannot happen without the help of volunteers, and the team really came through this year. What follows are a few comments on the event, and three suggestions for further improvement.

The Historic Mint Building and Fort Dalles Days Steering Committee announces the 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off and Benefit sponsored by The Mint. The highlight of this event, which will be July 11 from 6-10 p.m. in the Historic Mint Building located at 710 E. Second St., is that all proceeds will benefit Providence Hospice of the Gorge Children’s Grief Groups.

The Chronicle’s Slim Down Challenge 2013 is here, and entrants have until Thursday at 1 p.m. to register, either as individuals or with a team. The cost is $25 per person, with entrance fees, minus administrative costs, going to the cash prizes that will be awarded to the overall winner, the top male and female runners up, and the top team. Teams must have four members.
