Longtime Lyle resident Frank Tanner died at home Tuesday, July 8, 2003. Frank came to Lyle in his early years. He could tell stories by the hour of this area's history, keeping listeners glued to their seats. He was a hard worker, and avid Granger with many family and friends who will miss him dearly. A memorial will be held later this month at the Columbia Grange Hall.
Thayle M. Ford, resident of A & G Foster Home. died at Providence Hospital. He fought a battle with Parkinson's disease and succumbed on Saturday, July 12, 2003. He was a resident for such a short time but won the hearts of staff and co-residents.
Big River Diner was a flame with red hats everywhere on July 8. The 25 girls attending had a great time with each admiring the next one's new bonnet. Barbara barely sat down to her lunch when she was called away to Skyline Hospital. Her grandson Harlin Wood had been admitted to the emergency room with a broken left arm. Skyline decided Harlin needed more than they could offer and sent him on to Providence Hospital in Hood River. The anticipated surgery was eventually ruled out and Harlin was released to come home sporting a shoulder to wrist fiberglass cast. This is going to be a "Long Hot Summer."
Lorraine Reynolds, water/wastewater manager, for the PUD has accepted the council's invitation to attend the July 28 council meeting. She will speak and answer questions on the rates issue. This meeting is an opportunity for you to share your ideas and concerns; each speaker will have the floor for a one hour discussion including audience questions. There will be a 30-minute summation with adjournment promptly at 9 p.m.
"Find the key" -- We have a winner!!! Congratulations go to Darla Brashers who found the key hidden on the west wall of the fire hall building. New contest will begin next month. Good to see more than one out there hunting.

Lyle history taken from the Ruralite January 1980. "Still having fun," story by M.V. Frank Morgan: "'I guess you might say we sort of retired from cattle ranching to enjoy more square dancing,' laughs genial and wiry Blair Shippey of Skyline Cattle Ranch, four miles south of Appleton. Blair and Dorothy Shippey are a super-energetic and super-enthusiastic couple; for the 42 years of their marriage, they have worked hard on the farm that Blair's father Orie Shippey homesteaded in the early 1900s."
