Columbia ended the first quarter with a 14-10 edge on a basket by Laurel Huth, who scored six points in the period.

In the second quarter, Corbett rallied to tie the score on two occasions--16-16 at 5:12 and 20-20 at 1:51--before Columbia closed it out with an 8-2 run.

The closing surge began with a putback by Ziegler that broke the last tie. Shannon McNallan followed with her first basket of the game to make it 24-20, Adrianne DeLay hit a pull-up jumper, then fed Ziegler on a give-and-go for a 28-22 lead.

Columbia maintained the momentum in the third quarter, putting together a 9-3 scoring run that pushed its lead into double digits for the first time.

The Bruins maintained their advantage the rest of the way, leading by as many as 17 points (45-28) in the fourth quarter but by no less than 10 (48-38).

Said Bruins Coach Mike Yarnell: "For our first game, we played pretty well. We did the things we had to do to get the win. We took care of the ball--we only had 12 turnovers--stayed within our offense and, for the most part, got good looks at the basket."

A lot of those good looks came after offensive rebounds. Columbia grabbed 21 rebounds on its offensive end--seven by Ziegler--and won the rebounding battle overall, 41-19.

Lacey Kruse had eight rebounds and two steals to go with her six points, Clevidence totaled six rebounds and five points.

Huth finished with eight points and DeLay and McNallan each tallied six. Michelle McMillen contributed to the win with three steals and two points, and Claire Stevenson chipped in with two points and three rebounds.
