Lyle senior Tyler Austin defeated Jake Morgan of Hood River in a one-hole playoff to take medalist honors at the 13-team, season-opening The Dalles Invitational last Friday afternoon.
Austin and Morgan, who played in the same pairing, completed 18 holes with scores of 74 to bring about the tiebreaker, which took place on the par-4 fifth hole at The Dalles Country Club.
Austin reached the green in two, putting his second shot within five feet of the cup after his tee shot left him behind a rock wall.
Morgan's tee shot landed in tall grass behind a cliff, leaving him a difficult lie. Three shots later he was still short of the green.
Tyler Tucker of LaGrande, Ore., shot 77 to place third.
Lyle's Matthew Palmer fired an 86 for a Top-20 finish. Three bad holes took the senior out of the running for a higher ranking, according to Cougars Coach Joe Bales.
The Cougars' third team member, sophomore Sean Stanovich, carded a 97, much to the delight of both golfer and coach.
"It was the first time in match play that (Sean) has been under 100," Bales noted, "so it was great round for him."
The team title went to LaGrande in a one-hole playoff victory over Oregon City, Ore. Hood River ended up third.
Golfers from West Valley/Yakima and Sunnyside from the valley, and Hillsboro, Molalla, Newberg, Rainier, Seaside and Rex Putnam from Oregon also competed.
