Columbia Gorge Arts in Education (CGAIE) announced that during the 2009-2010 school year, it has provided service to over 6,000 students in 19 different schools and four counties in the Gorge.
For over 25 years, CGAIE has helped to provide funding to K-12 school children in Hood River, Wasco and Sherman counties in Oregon and Klickitat County in Washington.
CGAIE focuses its services in four main areas: places visual, performing and literary artist residencies in schools; creates community partnerships for public art; supports programs for at-risk students; and staff development and teacher training.
"Our mission is focused and clear: We believe art provides life skills essential to every child's education," said CGAIE Executive Director Leith Gaines. "Our goal is to bring the arts into every classroom in our region."
School budgets have dwindled over the last decade, thus funding for the arts is often cut. In fact, CGAIE residencies are sometimes the only arts education that students receive in school.
"Our service is now more important than ever. We are the only organization in the state of Oregon devoted solely to enhancing arts education in schools," Gaines stated.
