Shirts ... Reading a Portland daily, I find an editorial complaining about the lack of shirts for men. I agree with the editor. Then on the opposite page is a well illustrated article, announcing styles for women. I quote: “American women are going to wear evening gowns with exposed bosoms.”
There is something wrong with a system that allows for such discrimination. What I mean is, if shirt material is that scarce, why not set a style for men where a shirt isn’t necessary at all occasions, instead of asking the poor ladies to help out by wearing even less than they do now?

Council members stripped of assignements. Committee assignements — usually a routine Hood River City Council item — generated a heated exchange between the mayor and two council memebers here Monday. Mayor Jim Walker entirely excluded one council member from any committee assignements, and assigned another to only one panel. Each of the other council members received several assignements, and Walker assigned himself to committee membership.
Council members Don Barckley and Roy Cederstam expressed heated concern about their virtual ommission from the city’s committees, but the rest of the council ratified the assignement drafted by Walker without comment ... [Walker] conceded the list was “subjective,” but noted that it’s the mayor’s prerogative to make the assignements based on the cooperation he’s observed from various members of the council in the past. “It’s not a personal thing.”
