At lot of attention in these pages this fall was paid to Columbia High’s boys and girls cross country teams, and rightfully so as the CHS boys, in particular, had their best season since 1996, winning both league and district titles.
Opposing coaches also paid attention to the performances of CHS runners and saw fit to place three boys and three girls on their All-Trico League first teams.
Senior Cabot Roe and sophomores Colin Howe and Will Nuckoles were among seven runners to make the boys First Team. Howe was an honorable mention choice in 2013. The MVP of the league was Kalama sophomore Jared Hulsizer, who won his first individual league title at Husum Hills Golf Course in October.
Sophomore Fletcher Andrews received Second Team recognition.
Junior Sidra Matthias, a repeat selection, and freshmen Haley Blair and Rachel Luther joined four other Trico runners on the girls First Team. The league’s MVP was La Center junior Jenna Melanson.
Honorable mention on the girls side went to junior and first-year runner Kyzlen Stein, and on the boys side to freshman Declan Liddiard, who, like his girl classmates, had a breakout rookie season.
Football: Senior wide receiver Kyler Riggleman, who led Columbia in receiving this past season, was the only Bruin to make the All-Trico First Team Offense.
The First Team defense, though, included three Bruins: senior linebacker and leading tackler Ryan Aldrich, senior defensive back Tanner Rabinowitz, and sophomore punter Eduardo Oriz. (Rabinowitz was an honorable mention pick in 2013 as a quarterback.)
Columbia got shut out of Second Team Offense positions but placed three players, all seniors on the Second Team Defense: defensive end Blake Walker, linebacker Isaac Bell, and defensive back Noah Carmichael.
The Bruins’ lone honorable mention selection was senior running back Josh Lewis.
Trico champion La Center swept the individual awards for MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
Girls Soccer: Junior defender Olivia Grim repeated as an All-Trico First Team selection for her play during the 2014 season, and senior midfielder Savannah Story earned a spot on the Second Team. Grim garnered honorable mention in 2012, and Story was an H.M. pick in 2013.
The team’s top scorer, senior midfielder/forward Allie Spadaro, and junior midfielder/defender Mailisa MacNally received honorable mention (MacNally for the second year in a row). Spadaro was injured last season and did not play.
Volleyball: Senior hitter/blocker Kayla McClain’s honorable mention in All-Trico voting was the only recognition granted to Columbia High volleyball in 2014. The award was the first of McClain’s varsity career.
