Local OSP wins hoops title

The Dalles dominated the recent 2015 Oregon State Police basketball tournament in Newport, taking home the championship trophy after a six-game winning streak. The basketball tournament, a longstanding tradition, features troopers or their immediate family members. Troopers from The Dalles area command won the tournament three years in a row from 2000 to 2002, then won again in 2005.

At lot of attention in these pages this fall was paid to Columbia High’s boys and girls cross country teams, and rightfully so as the CHS boys, in particular, had their best season since 1996, winning both league and district titles.

An unfortunate but timely reminder during warm-ups of the risks skaters take in the sport of roller derby set the tone for Saturday’s home bout hosted by the Gorge Roller Girls. After receiving a standing ovation as paramedics hoisted a Storm City Roller Girls skater into an awaiting ambulance with a broken leg, players from both teams did a quick gear check with referees before getting started with the bout.
