Months — and in one case more than a year — of campaigning for candidates seeking elective public offices came to a head Tuesday night, as the 2014 General Election ballots of thousands of Klickitat County residents were tabulated by the Auditor’s Office.
According to preliminary tallies for partisan offices released by the Auditor’s Office, former county timber/range deputy Robert “Bob” Songer Sr. (photo 1) was winning the contest for sheriff against County Undersheriff Marc Boardman, 52.8% to 47.2%; incumbent Assess-or Darlene Johnson was losing to challenger Crista Schroder (photo 2), 42.5% to 57.5%; challenger David Quesnel (photo 3) was defeating in-cumbent Prosecutor Lori Hoctor, 56.2% to 43.8%; and District 2 Com-missioner David Sauter (photo 4) was beating first-time candidate for county office Mike Richards, 67.1% to 32.9%.
In non-partisan races, incumbent District 2 PUD Commissioner Dan Gunkel was ahead of challenger Sherry Carver, 53.5% to 46.5%, while Jeff Baker won election to the position of West District Court Judge with 78% of the vote.
Voter turnout countywide on Tuesday ran at just under 41%, according to the Auditor’s Office.
Locally, Proposition No. 1, the property tax levy request from Mt. Adams Park and Recreation District for maintenance and operations, was failing, 59.1% No to 40.9% Yes.
Unofficial multicounty results for state partisan offices showed Gina McCabe was winning election to Position 2 Representative for the 14th Legislative District, while incumbent Norm Johnson was winning re-election as Position 1 Representative.
Preliminary multicounty results for the race for 3rd Congressional District Representative between two-term incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler and Democratic challenger Bob Dingethal were favoring the Republican, 60.6% to 49.4%.
Statewide, the initiative for smaller class sizes, 1351, was passing (50.1% to 49.9%), as was I-594, a pro-gun registration measure (60.8% to 39.2%). I-591, a competing anti-gun registration measure, was trailing (55.4% to 44.6%)
In Skamania County, incumbent District 3 Commissioner Bob Anderson, a Republican, was losing to Democratic challenger Bob Hamlin 41.7% to 58.3%, while Liz Green was beating Tom Linde in the non-partisan race for District 3 PUD Commissioner, 54.1% to 45.9%.
