THE DALLES equestrian athlete Miguel Cuevas rushes his horse to another barrel during Oregon High School Equestrian Team state competition at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond. Cuevas netted a final time of 15.242 seconds to grab TD’s best output of 11th place. In all, The Dalles scored 23 team points, 14 of those coming in team events.
The Dalles equestrian team had 10 athletes take a trip to Redmond for state action and racked up 23 team points, including 14 in team events in Oregon High School Equestrian Team competition completed at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond.
In the first day of action, the Freestyle Fours group of Sararose Campanella, Mackenzie Urness, Morgan Ramirez, Hannah Simmons and Callista Shae Howell combined for 1,316 points and 12th place in the standings.
Emma, Aimee and Sara Treichel and Howell also hit the arena for the In-Hand Obstacle Relay for a final time of five minutes and 57 seconds with 190 points to hit 17th place.
The Dalles was signed up for four events on the second day and Miguel Cuevas nearly stood atop the final rankings, but a five-second penalty dropped him from third-place to 21st in the Pole bending Event where he ended up with a final mark of 26.634.
Ramirez and Howell combined for a 28.899 in the Two-Man BiRangle event to capture 17th place, and Howell had a time of 15.797 for 24th place in Barrel Racing.
Cuevas secured the team’s best time in Barrels with an 11th-place output with a time of 15.242.
The Dalles did not participate in the final two days.
The Oregon High School Equestrian Teams state championship was originally scheduled for late May, but had to be postponed due to “progressions with the EHV-1 (equine herpes virus) outbreak,” particularly in Western Oregon.
This season marked a breakthrough for the program, as it had its largest number of state qualifiers in recent memory.
At the third meet in April, Howell earned the High Point Belt Buckle for the Team Contributor award.
Howell tallied more points than any other athlete in the district in team events.
“This is a big honor and well-deserved,” said TD team advisor, Debi Ferrer. “Callista participated in all five of the possible team events and she has really done well with her various partners, placing well throughout the season.”
In order to qualify for state, the Freestyle Four group of Urness, Simmons, Ramirez, Howell and Campanella earned second place overall with a combined score of 1,189 and ended up third for the season to punch their state ticket.
In the Two-Man Birangle event, Cuevas and Chloe Godwin scored a time of 29.02 seconds for 11th place to pick up a state bid.
Urness and Howell jumped up in the standings with fifth place Sunday in 28.18 for fourth place on the season to preserve a state berth.
Howell, Aimee Treichel, Sara Treichel, and Emma Treichel clocked in at 4:49 and a score of 119 for third place in the In-Hand Obstacle Relay, which put them in second place in the overall season rankings for a state qualification.
In the Team Penning event, Howell, Urness and Ramirez combined for three pens, four cows and a total time of 204.82 for sixth place and third overall for the 2015 campaign to earn a state trip.
Cuevas had a time of 15.697 to grab eighth place in Barrel Racing, as he finished fourth for the season to pick up another state slot.
Howell was good for ninth place in 15.705 and tallied eighth place in the overall standings and tallied a first alternate spot in Barrels.
“Both of these athletes are to be commended, as barrels is probably the most competitive event in the district,” Ferrer said.
Cuevas added a 23.351 in the Pole Bending event for fifth place and ended up in third place overall for the season to qualify for state in that run.
“Miguel was very consistent all season with fast, clean runs at every meet,” Ferrer said.
