Barlow jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the opening quarter and slowly kept building on that lead until coming away with a 56-38 victory over The Dalles Tuesday in a non-league boys’ basketball game at Kurtz Gym in The Dalles.
The Dalles started the fourth quarter down by 39-26 and got as close as 42-30 after a 3-pointer by Devin Wilson with five minutes and 40 seconds left in regulation.
Things looked like the Riverhawks were about to turn the corner and The Dalles had back-to-back possessions with a chance to cut into the lead.
Barlow guard Dominick Copper later hit a three-point basket to swell the lead to 46-30.
On TD’s next trip, they missed two free throws and the Bruins capitalized on their time up the court, as Nic Meyer scored a layup for a 48-32 cushion with 4:01 on the clock.
Down the stretch, both teams scored six points apiece, but The Dalles was unable to cut into the big lead.
In addition, when TD got the basket and created foul difficulties for the Bruins, the Hawks managed a 7 for 19 split from the free throw line, 2 for 9 in the final quarter.
The Bruins used some hot shooting to gain the early 11-point lead entering the second quarter, and they then came out in the second quarter with a 12-11 output to make it a 27-15 halftime lead.
Barlow added a 12-11 split in the third quarter to jump ahead by a 39-26 lead.
On the shooting of Meyer and Copper, the Bruins outscored TD 17-12 in the fourth.
“Our hustle is there, we just need to do little things like better, cleaner passes, squaring up our shots more, looking for the open shot, boxing out and rebounding,” said Colton Walker. “It is a lot of things, but I think we can still do it.”
The Dalles sank 14 field goals, three from 3-point territory and had the 7 for 19 effort from the line.
Storm Douthit, Gordy Harris and Colin Noonan hit three baskets each to lead the Riverhawks with eight points apiece.
Wilson had six points and senior post player Coby Conlee finished with four points.
Copper hit three 2-pointers and four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 21 points and teammate Kobie Ham tallied 10 points for a Barlow squad that hit 18 field goals and shot 15 for 28 from the free throw line.
Just two games in, Townsend is not interested in wins and losses, just that his group continues to improve every day.
“We have eight kids here that have not played a lot of varsity minutes before,” Townsend said. “As coaches, we know that, but every game we have improved. We have a long ways to go, but at least I am exciting about how hard they work for us in a game and in practice.”
