The South Wasco County Redsides and new head coach Donna Barton finally were able to hit the courts in a real game Friday in their home opener versus Stanfield.
Although the match was played very close with an average of five points separating the three sets, the Tigers came out on top in a non-league volleyball contest in Maupin.
“For our first game, I felt we played hard, but made too many unforced errors,” Barton said.
Stanfield got off to a good start in the first set with a 25-21 win, but the Redsides were determined to get back in contention in the second frame.
SWC battled strong, but could not get the bounces down the stretch in taking a 25-22 setback to go down 2-0 in the match.
Finally in the third game, the Tigers enjoyed their largest margin of victory, eight points, to complete the road sweep.
On the service line, the Redsides dropped 87 percent overall.
Peggy Espeland went 8 for 8, Molly Foreaker connected on 14 of 15 and Baily Hogenkamp was 17 of 19.
On the front lines, Hogenkamp was SWC’s leading hitter with a 15 for 18 split to go with a team-high six kills.
Molly and Allie Noland both chipped in with three kills apiece.
“We had some good hustle plays keeping the ball alive, the Redside coach continued.
Now that the first match is in the books, Barton can gain a better standing in the evaluation process.
“First games are always good for you to figure out what we need to emphasize more in practice,” the coach said.
SWC hosts Lyle for a non-league tilt at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
