SHERMAN’S Isaiah Coles flies through the air in the long jump compeititon at last season’s 1A Big Sky Conference District 3 Track and Field Meet in Moro. Coming off a successful year in 2014, Coles and the Huskies are primed to make bigger leaps this spring under new head coach Kyle Pfieffer.
With a roster of multiple district champions and state qualifiers, new Sherman head coach Kyle Pfeifer has the Huskies trending upwards for the 2015 track and field season.
Blake Evans, Isaiah Coles, Brett Evans, Sabrina Green-Hite and newcomers Brianna McKinney and Kiersten Casper make up the core of the 20 athletes signed for action in the competitive Big Sky Conference.
So far, Pfeifer has been impressed by what he has seen.
“We have a large group of athletes returning this season with only losing two seniors last year,” the Husky coach said. “This group has been focused and determined to work hard since day one of practice. They are determined to continue our success from last season and continue to better themselves in their respective events.”
As the defending district champions, the Sherman boys also have Maverick Winslow, Kevin Hart, Parker Lepinskie, Tucker Coons, Kenny Earl, Hunter Grenvik, Luke Lawrence and freshman mid-distance runner and high jumper Reese Blake in the mix.
On the girl’s side, seniors Green-Hite and Janet Guzman and junior thrower Jasmine Wilson flank a young roster of six underclassmen.
Sophomores Emily Hill, Grace Kuettel and Mikkaela Ruise add depth in several events, and Lexi Grenvik, McKinney and Casper enter the season with some solid careers under their belts at the middle school levels.
The Sherman girls are also coming off a district-championship performance last season, but will be without graduated senior Andie Harrison.
Although track and field is primarily focused on individual accomplishments, the team element is still critical to collaborative success.
“We will need the entire team to show up and compete in each and every event to be successful as a team,” Pfeifer said. “The athletes will need to continue to work hard, follow workouts, be mentally focused and have fun while competing to be able to elevate themselves to another level.”
The Huskies, will need to hit the ground running against several schools that will be gunning for the defending district champions.
Horizon Christian, Griswold, Condon-Wheeler, Dufur and South Wasco County are the teams Pfeifer feels represent quality programs that can pose a threat at any given meet.
“Condon/Wheeler is always a big competitor that we will be right on top and be a big competition to our student-athletes this season,” Pfeifer said. “Dufur and South Wasco County will also put up a good fight to be right on top. All of these teams have a lot of student-athletes returning that will be a challenge to our team.”
Looking back at the 2014 season, the Huskies improved by leaps and bounds as the season progressed.
The girl’s 4x100-meter relay team won a district title and claimed sixth at state in a time of 53.44 seconds, as one of the highlights.
Winslow, Coles and the Evans brothers were state qualifying boys, with the district champion 4x100 relay team (graduated senior Nick Coleman, Winslow and the Evans brothers) finishing third at state in a time of 45.76.
Brett Evans added fourth at state in the 800-meters and Coles had a leap of 20-feet-7.25 inches to pick up second place in the long jump.
There is some optimism with this core group, Pfeiefer said.
“This group is more determined and ready to continue to develop as successful athletes,” Pfeifer said. “I believe that we have a lot of potential to be right on top again this season as long as we are committed and take the proper steps necessary in the classroom, in the weight room and on the track.”
The Huskies were at the Mullen-Leavitt Invitational today in The Dalles.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, Sherman hosts its annual meet in Moro.
