With senior pitcher Bailey Ortega dialed in on the mound, all The Dalles Riverhawk offense needs to do is capitalize on a few scoring opportunities to come out on top.
Ortega tossed a complete-game five-hitter with three strikeouts, and the TD offense broke open a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to defeat 6A West Albany by a 6-3 margin Tuesday at Bob Williams Field in The Dalles.
This marked the third consecutive quality start for Ortega, who saw his defense turn two double plays, senior catcher Kellen Mathisen gunned down a stolen base attempt and several players made top defensive plays in the field.
“Bailey threw a great game today and gave our defense a chance to make plays,” said TD head coach J.R. Runyon. “Our coaching staff was really happy with all aspects of our level of play today, we put all three parts together, pitching, defense and offense. We played a good ball club today and competed very well.”
Ahead by a 3-2 score in the bottom of the fifth inning, Colton Walker led off with a single, and Mathisen followed with an RBI double to left centerfield to give TD a 4-2 lead.
Two outs later, with a runner in scoring position, Boston Bate reached on an error by the West Albany second baseman, allowing another run to cross the plate for a three-run lead.
TD capped its scoring after a leadoff single by Cash Mathewson and an RBI single to left field by Walker in the bottom of the sixth.
West Albany (3-6 overall) scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to inch to within a 6-3 deficit, but Ortega retired the final three batters he faced, ending the game on a groundout to second base.
Walker totaled three hits, drove in a run, stole a base, and scored twice, Mathisen posted two RBIs, and Bate scored a run and drove in another, as TD had six hits and received four walks.
Colin Noonan, Mathewson and Peters also scored runs, and Dawson Hoffman tallied a hit and was issued a walk in his three plate appearances.
Brenden Bliss had a hit and a walk, Jayce Lien went 1 for 3, and Bennett Markley notched two hits and scored a run to pace West Albany.
With the win, TD (4-6) moves to No. 13 in the 5A rankings.
The Hawks head to Salem Friday for a non-league baseball game against 6A McKay (3-5).
