The Dalles softball players Hannah Harris and Ruthie Ford added some leadership and all-around play to the young Riverhawks earlier this spring, and were rewarded with first-team all-league honors.
Now that junior duo completes the 2015 season with accolades from other coaches from across Oregon with third-team all-state awards.
TD head coach Steve Garrett called Harris, the offensive spark of the team.
From her leadoff spot in the batting order, Harris led the team in hitting with a .500 average in league play and .444 overall.
She led the Hawks with 12 stolen bases, 36 hits, and 27 runs scored and tied for second on the team with 23 RBIs.
Harris had a slugging percentage of .642 for second on the team, she collected 10 doubles and three triples and was voted Most Valuable Player by the coaching staff.
“Her tenacity towards getting on base provided us with a constant threat to score and her speed made it even more so,” Garrett said. “A heady baserunner that knows her speed and abilities well enough to seldom get thrown out taking the extra base. She will be a huge asset to the lineup again next season.”
Earlier this season, Harris had one of her best games in TD’s season finale on the road against Hood River Valley that enabled the Riverhawks to score second place in the Columbia River Conference.
She was 4 for 4 with a base on balls, getting on base all five trips.
Harris ripped a line drive bases-loaded double that hit right on top of the third base bag and ran into the right field corner in the top of the fifth inning that put the Hawks ahead for good in that game.
On April 2 against Sandy, Harris paced the team’s seven-hit attack with a 3 for 4 effort with three RBIs and two runs scored in TD’s 8-7 home loss.
In an 11-1 win over Franklin on April 8, Harris spearheaded the Riverhawk offense by going 4 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
Ford, another junior, who is set to come back to the roster to help Garrett and the Riverhawks, displayed some pop, was able to cover ground in the outfield and kept runners from advancing due to her strong, accurate arm.
Ford hit .391 overall and led the team with 24 RBIs, 14 doubles, one triple in her 92 plate appearances.
Defensively, Ford had four outfield assists, throwing runners out from centerfield, and one error in 40 chances on the year.
She was second on the squad in stolen bases with eight and struck out only four times (once per every 23 at bats) also a team-best.
“Ruthie is electrical energy that snaps and pops all game long,” Garrett said. “We are working to get her to harness that energy and focus on using it more productively for her good and the good of the team. This is her third year on varsity and she has earned her spot with that energy. She should also have a monster senior year next season.”
One of her highlight performances came on March 21 in a weekend road doubleheader versus Bend.
In a doubleheader, Ford was 7 for 8 with four doubles and six RBIs.
Ford also shined in opening-game action at the annual Riverhawk Tournament on March 24 against West Anchorage, Alaska.
Ford went 4 for 5 with a run scored and three RBIs, as the Riverhawks were upended by an 11-10 margin.
In a CRC league doubleheader at home on April 18, Ford went a combined 3 for 7 from the plate with a walk, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Hawks to a two-game sweep over Hermiston.
“She came up big for us on many occasions,” Garrett said.
